Three online, inter-faith ‘Birmingham Conversations’ will take place in February and March. The theme of the conversations is ‘Passing on Our Faiths: Nurturing children and young people of all religions.’ In each online gathering, people from different faiths will explain how they teach their beliefs and practices to children and young people, with all the joys and challenges that this entails.
Each conversation will take place from 7.30pm to 8.30pm via Zoom. On Monday 13 February, the focus will be on teaching children of Primary School age. The focus of the meeting of 27 February will be sharing faith with teenagers. On Monday 13 March, the topic will be equipping young people for life in a multi-faith society and showing how young people can build friendships with people from a different faith background to their own. Register to attend the Birmingham Conversations by e-mailing THIS ADDRESS.
According to the 2021 Census, 34% of Birmingham’s population described themselves as Christian, 29.9% as Muslim, 2.9% as Sikh, 1.9% as Hindu, 0.4% as Buddhist, 0.1% as Jewish an 0.6% as ‘other religion.’ 24.1% said that they had no religion and 6% declined to answer the question about their religious affiliation.
The Birmingham Conversations started in 2014, with the aim of bringing together select groups of people of all faiths and none to discuss issues of faith and public life. It was felt that some of the more contentious issues of how faith is lived out rarely get discussed in the inter-faith context, and the intention was to create a space and methodology that would enable constructive dialogue.
