New National Police Chaplain

In early January 2024, Pastor Matthew Hopley began work as the National Police Chaplain. Matthew has been involved with Police Chaplaincy for more than 12 years, firstly as a volunteer with West Midlands Police, then as leader of the Chaplaincy team at Warwickshire Police. During that time, Matthew was also a staff member of the Assemblies of God Church in Birmingham now known as Trinity Church. Having become National Police Chaplain, Matthew has left the Trinity Church staff team, but is still supporting its senior leaders by preaching and leading church services as required.

Matthew is married to Donna and together they have two sons and a daughter. The Hopley family will continue to live in Birmingham and feel blessed to have a great friendship circle around them who cheer them on and pray for them.

An official Commissioning Service will take place in Birmingham later in February 2024. At the service, Matthew will be commissioned by Police Chaplaincy UK in partnership with the National Police Chiefs’ Council. As an ordained Minister with Assemblies of God in Great Britain, Matthew will also be commissioned by his sending denomination, led by Pastor Kirk McAtear.

Deputy Chief Constable Maggie Blyth, National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for Police Chaplaincy, said, ‘We look forward to welcoming Rev. Matthew Hopley to the team at National Police Chiefs’ Council as he takes up the post of National Police Chaplain. Chaplaincy has long existed within policing and the incredible contribution of the staff and volunteer multi-faith Police Chaplains is very much appreciated. Revd Matthew, along with the PCUK team, have a renewed vision for Chaplaincy which the NPCC fully support.’

Those wishing to attend the Commissioning Service must register their attendance by e-mailing Police Chaplaincy UK at THIS ADDRESS. For more information about Police Chaplaincy UK, click HERE.
