A church leader with strong Birmingham connections has been awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honour’s list. Having co-chaired (with Priti Patel) the Parliamentary Windrush Working Group, Bishop Dr Derek Webley was honoured for services to the Windrush Generation. The Windrush Working Group was set up in June 2020 to bring together community organisations with government representatives to support the delivery of practical solutions and address challenges affecting the Windrush generation and their families.
Bishop Derek worked as an administrator for British Gas West Midlands before entering full-time Christian ministry in 1987. Derek is a minister in the New Testament Church of God. He was its National Director of Evangelism from 1987 to 1991, National Director of Youth and Christian Education from 1991 to 1997 and District Bishop for Birmingham/Solihull from 1996 to 2014. He serves on NTCG’s national Executive Council as Secretary/Treasurer (Link HERE).
Bishop Derek has served on a number of committees in the West Midlands, including Relate, the Lord Chancellor Advisory Committee, Birmingham Citizens and Chair of The Drum. He is a former President of the Rotary Club of Birmingham and former Chair of the West Midlands Police Authority. Derek was appointed one of the West Midlands Deputy Lieutenants in 2008 (Link HERE).
