Youth mentoring support group coming to Birmingham

The ‘Transitions UK’ charity supports some of the most vulnerable young people in society through tailor-made, person-centred mentoring plans. Transitions has been operating in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire since 2014, but having researched the need and secured further funding, wishes to expand its work into Birmingham.

The charity’s existing projects support young people who are at a high risk of offending, who have a learning disability, or who have reached the age where they are leaving the care of the local authority. The Birmingham project will support care-leavers aged 16 – 25 who would benefit from wrap-around support and engagement with a network of volunteer mentors.

Transitions hopes to be able to launch the service in the city at the beginning of March and is now seeking local support. The ways in which local people can be involved include:

  • Becoming a volunteer mentor for an hour or so per week.
  • Providing work-experience opportunities to young people via a local business.
  • Sharing specific skills with a young person, or with a group of young people.
  • Helping to raise awareness of the charity.
  • Hosting a fundraising event.
  • Sponsoring Transition UK’s Birmingham work.

Whilst the Transitions UK is not an overtly Christian charity, it is very much founded on Christian principles. Founder and CEO Ron Overton is a former Baptist Minister and fully endorses the charity’s intentions, ethos, and vision. Visit Transitions UK’s Facebook page HERE and its website HERE.

Transitions UK will hold an informal information event via Zoom at 8.00pm on Wednesday 17 February. This information-and-awareness event will be addressed by Ron Overton and will include the personal story of a beneficiary of the charity. The Zoom meeting login number is 898 4541 0369 and the password is TUK. Let Lee know if you intend to join the information event via this E-MAIL ADDRESS.
